The Jonathan Webb Clinic joins the Flora London Marathon Injury Clinic network

The Jonathan Webb Clinic has been chosen to join a network of 47 nationwide clinics specialising in running injuries, as an official partner to the London Marathon.

The Flora London Marathon website states that it “only invites clinics who are qualified up to the highest level and have great experience in injury prevention, injury rehabilitation and performance assistance specific to endurance running”, and we are pleased to be involved as more Bristol based runners step up their training regime ahead of April’s event.

Karen Jordan, Patricia Collins, Pete Tang and Gill Holt, all have exceptional experience in the field. Patricia volunteers for the London Marathon medical team, providing first-aid, hands on treatment and injury advice on the day of the race. All our clinicians are highly experienced in running analysis and biomechanical evaluation. This enables us to treat current injuries, whilst also addressing underlying imbalances that may affect performance and the development of further injury.

Whether you are a novice, training for your first event, or an experienced runner, you may benefit from a full musculoskeletal assessment and examination. Our physiotherapists will prescribe appropriate exercises to address muscle imbalance and altered biomechanics, along with manual therapy and self management strategies.

Nicole Cooke: "Jonathan Webb helped me to realise my Olympic dream"

Olympic Gold medallist Nicole Cooke has thanked Bristol-based orthopaedic surgeon, Jonathan Webb, for surgery that helped her to reach her Olympic dream.

The 25-year-old from South Wales achieved Britain's first gold in the Beijing Olympics in August when she won the women's cycling road race, despite having suffering a career-threatening injury to her knee following a serious crash.

Nicole said: "I'd like to thank Jonathan and his team for their part in making my dream to win Olympic Gold come true.

"His expertise along with the help and support I've received from the Clinic over the last four years made it possible for me to overcome pain and injury and be ready in time for the Olympics.

"It takes a lot of hard work to get to the Olympics and to be held back by your body can be very demoralising. We met at a difficult time for me professionally when I was struggling to find an answer to the pain in my knee. Jonathan's skills as a surgeon and the knowledge of the team at the Clinic helped to remedy my injury. Along with family, friends, my team mates and advisors they were part of making my dream come true!"

Ex-England rugby full back, Webb, said: "We all wanted her to win. It's a pleasure to have helped Nicole through what must have seemed like a never ending series of problems, but it was her determination that was the key factor to her recovery, and the same goes for anyone else.

"Our multi-disciplinary team at the Jonathan Webb Clinic helps thousands of people back to full fitness each year and we understand the pain and frustration that injuries cause. I'm proud to congratulate her on our behalf and we all wish her luck for the future."

Nicole first sought treatment from Webb in 2004. Nicole had tried unsuccessfully to remedy her injured knee using non-invasive treatment following a serious crash in 2003. Jonathan performed surgery for a knee condition sometimes found in high level endurance athletes, such as cyclists and rowers, and two months later Nicole won the prestigious Giro D'Italia.

Another operation followed on her right knee in 2005. Following both operations Nicole was supported by the Clinic's multi-disciplinary team of professionals who provided advice to her and her team on rehabilitation. The Jonathan Webb Clinic continued to provide advice throughout Nicole's training for the Olympics.

Stuart Miller sets off for Beijing

Stuart Miller, one of our Sports Physicians is busy preparing to travel to Beijing for the Paralympic Games. He is the Chief Medical Officer for the GB Team and he will be responsible for the medical care of all the athletes competing.

The Jonathan Webb Clinic would like to wish Team GB the very best of luck and hope they can bring back plenty of medals! We hope that once Stuart has returned from the Games he will provide an insight into his work with the team. Updates on the team's progress can be found here: http://www.paralympics.org.uk/

Jonathan Webb's team triumphs at the Superteams 2008 Challenge

Jonathan Webb's team, featuring representatives from Bristol Rugby, have won this year's Superteams Challenge.

Following the first successful event in 2006, and with continued growth and popularity since that time, Superteams is an annual team event that allows local businesses to raise money for Fairbridge and Young Bristol, local charities helping local people.

Bristol Rugby player Dan Ward-Smith, who underwent specialist knee surgery with Jonathan Eldridge at the clinic last year, successfully set a new event record in the rowing machine challenge, proving that he is back to full fitness! For the full story, please click here

Fiona Barker shares her knowledge in Europe

In June 2008, our jet-setting physiotherapist, Fiona Barker flew to Portugal to teach post graduate muscle imbalance techniques to physiotherapists from all over Europe.

Despite having to work through an interpreter (which is no mean feat!) she was very well received and has been invited back to run more sessions in Europe and Latin America in the future. She will be running further sessions in London and Yorkshire later this year, adding to her impressive portfolio of teaching work.
